Really, the biggest problem we’re all facing today in the fitness industry is a severe lack of factual based statements. People tend to make assumptions about which supplements work and which ones don’t. Even worse, these opinions usually come in a ‘love/hate’ format. It’s either amazing or it’s awful; there’s rarely any sort of analytical breakdown about what works and what doesn’t.
According to the internet and hardcore athletes, Muscle Milk isn’t worth your hard-earned money. But let’s take a step back. Remove the hype and the hatred and what do you have? A legitimate supplement that deserves more respect than it gets? Or are we really looking at a sub-par whey protein supplement?
Taste and Mixability:
While some of our more intense readers definitely don’t mind when a supplement tastes awful, most of you are probably in a different boat. In case you were worried about this supplement’s taste, worry no more. Most of these flavors were solid…most.
While certain flavors like Strawberries ‘N Crème and Graham Cracker steal the show, there are few flavors we weren’t the biggest fans of. Red Velvet Cake and Peanut Butter Chocolate might be a bit harder to handle, but for the most part, these flavors were decent.
We weren’t particularly impressed with the mixability of Muscle Milk. Considering the progress that whey proteins have made in the area of mixability these last 10 years, it’s genuinely surprising to run into a whey protein that doesn’t break down well (especially considering the mixability of some of the whey proteins we’ve reviewed here). Whether its water or milk, this whey protein just does not blend well. Be prepared to throw in some extra water if you want the consistency to be a bit more manageable.
Value:
We’ve said this a thousand times, but we’ll say it again: value is about more than just how much money you spend. Is keeping your budget in mind important? Yes. But can you really afford to spend money on supplements that don’t work (or cheating yourself out of results by refusing to spend money on high-quality supplements)? We didn’t think so.
That being said, the amount of money you’ll end up spending on Muscle Milk is actually pretty low. At about $0.75/£0.60 per serving, you’re looking at one the most inexpensive whey protein supplements we have. Regardless of what you think about Muscle Milk, there’s no denying how affordable it is.
Effectiveness:
Here’s where things start to get interesting. The first thing we noticed once we began our CytoSport Muscle Milk review was how low the amount of protein was per serving. 16 grams of protein isn’t exactly going to blow anyone away. More importantly, it’s simply not enough. The ideal amount of protein to consume after a workout is roughly 20 grams, which means that this supplement dropped the ball in that department. Of course, if you plan on having more than one serving (which they recommend if you plan on building lean muscle mass) or combining it with some other source of protein, then this is no problem.
Thankfully, the ingredient list for this whey protein supplement is very thorough. Muscle Milk has Vitamin A for cell growth and immune system support, Vitamin C for protection against cardiovascular disease, Calcium for bone health support and a variety of other vitamins and minerals.
Our particular experience with Muscle Milk was actually pretty positive. When compared to other whey protein supplements that we used, Muscle Milk certainly didn’t leave us with any muscle soreness the day after our workouts. In fact, our muscular growth barely slowed down at all.
Side Effects:
Muscle Milk doesn’t have any noticeably dangerous side effects. The usual rule applies for this supplement: if you feel ill at any point after taking this supplement, discontinue use immediately and consult your physician.
Pros
- Extremely affordable
- Good amount of vitamins and nutrients
- Clear ingredient list
- Lactose free
Cons
- Low protein quantity
- Mixability poor
- Some flavours are difficult to handle
CytoSport Muscle Milk Review Conclusion:
Frankly, after wrapping up our CytoSport Muscle Milk review, we have a hard time understanding why Muscle Milk is supposed to be hated. Sure, their amount of protein per serving is a bit on the lower side. But they offer an alternative form of consumption for people looking to build size and gain muscle mass (2 servings instead of just one).
Beyond that, let’s just take a look at what this supplement is bringing to the table. Muscle Milk has plenty of high-quality vitamins and minerals, as well as a decidedly impressive lactose-free supplement. Is this the most amazing supplement on the market? Of course not, but that’s not the point. Instead of trying to focusing on the negatives of this supplement, think about the positives and about how CytoSport did their best to create an affordable whey protein alternative for the average person looking for a lactose-free way to get more protein into their diet.
